Mastering an instrument recorded on microphone?

I was watching some behind the scenes for a few band's recording their albums. I noticed that alot of the instruments were recorded using condenser microphones positioned around the room. Could anyone explain the effects and steps necessary to fixing up the sound recorded through the mic, to produce as professional a recording as possible?
