Help! Dog has bald spots! Mom won't take him to the vet?

Ok, so he's about 4 years old, he's a doberman. He has bald patches on his back. He feels lumpy, like there's something under his skin (not on his bald spots). The bald spots are full of flaky skin. My mom won't take him to the vet! What could this be and is there anything I can do to help? Thanks. ps, the bald spots are getting bigger and there is getting to be more of them.
